What is a Podiatrist?
Podiatrists are doctors who, following college, four years of medical school and a surgical residency, provide comprehensive care to the foot and ankle. This includes podiatric medicine, podiatric surgery and podiatric sports medicine.
Podiatric medicine involves the evaluation, diagnosis and care of common foot problems including pain, corns, calluses, plantar fasciitis, skin disorders, arthritis, fungal infections, ingrown toenails and plantar warts, foot and ankle injuries, heel pain, tendonitis, fractures, ankle sprains, high arches and flat feet. Also included are complications of the lower extremities related to diabetes, peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation) and peripheral neuropathy (numbness).
Podiatric surgery is performed to correct various disorders, such as bunions, hammertoes, neuromas, tendon injuries, ganglion cysts, arthritis, congenital deformities and fractures of the foot and ankle.
